Hands in soil with plants.

Washtenaw County 4-H Junior Master Gardener Program

The 4-H Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program is designed for youth ages 9 to 11 and provides an interactive, hands-on educational experience in gardening enabling them to achieve a Junior Master Gardener certificate. Classroom topics include: Soil, Introduction to Plants, Flowers, Vegetables, Yard and Garden Pests, and Lawns, and Woody Plants. The youth will also have hands on experience in Gardening (planting, tending, and harvesting) in a garden plot. JMG is taught by adult volunteers who are both MSU Extension Master Gardeners and 4-H volunteers.

Each JMG participating must attend all 6 classes, complete all quizzes, and accumulate at least 10 volunteer hours.  If participants miss a class, they can make up the content by completing a make-up assignment. Participants are responsible for caring for the JMG Garden, which they will plant during class, throughout the spring and summer until the Graduation Party. Volunteer hours are accumulated by caring for the garden during pre-arranged times. Participants who complete the JMG program will be recognized and receive a 4-H Junior Master Gardener certificate of accomplishment at the Graduation Party.
